You’ve probably been told, at some point, that you “overpronate.” Maybe a shop assistant watched you walk on a treadmill for eight seconds and delivered the verdict like a diagnosis. Maybe you googled it after your ankles ached following a long run. Either way, you’re now standing in front of a wall of shoes with words like “stability,” “guide rail,” and “motion control” on the box, and no real idea which one — if any — you actually need.
Here’s the first honest thing to say: overpronation isn’t a disease, and most runners who “overpronate” run just fine without ever thinking about it again. Pronation is the natural inward roll of the foot after it strikes the ground — it’s how your foot absorbs shock. Some roll more than others. That’s not automatically a problem. It becomes relevant when it’s paired with pain, and even then, shoes are one piece of a bigger picture that includes your training load, your strength, and how quickly you’ve ramped up mileage.

The in-store gait analysis — running on a treadmill while someone watches your ankles from behind — is a decent starting point, but it’s not a medical assessment. When a stability shoe is actually worth trying
You don’t need a stability shoe just because someone told you that you pronate. You might want one if:

- Your current neutral shoes feel like they collapse or “give way” on the inside edge, especially late in a run when you’re fatigued
- You have visibly flat or low arches and you’re increasing mileage (say, moving from 5K to half marathon training) and starting to notice new aches
You probably don’t need one if:
- You pronate but have no pain, no history of injury, and you feel fine
- You’re chasing a stability shoe because of marketing, not symptoms

What actually causes most “overpronation” pain (it’s often not the pronation)
This is the part shoe marketing conveniently skips: the research on pronation and injury is genuinely mixed. Several studies have failed to find a strong, consistent link between the degree of pronation and injury rates. What correlates far more reliably with injury is training load — how fast you increase mileage, how much rest you get between hard efforts, and whether you’ve got underlying weakness in your hips, glutes, or calves.
So before you spend £150 on motion control shoes, ask yourself honestly:
- Have I increased my weekly mileage by more than 10% in the last two weeks?
- Am I doing any strength work — even 15 minutes, twice a week — for hips and calves?
- Have I replaced my shoes in the last 500–800km, or are they worn down unevenly on the inner edge?
- Is the pain new, or has it been nagging for months without me addressing the actual cause?
If your shoes are old and lopsided, that alone can create the sensation of “worse” pronation — because the cushioning has collapsed asymmetrically. Sometimes the fix isn’t a different shoe category. It’s just a new pair of the shoe you already had.
A simple test you can do at home tonight
You don’t need a lab. Grab your current running shoes and look at the wear pattern on the outsole:
- Even wear across the middle of the sole, slight wear on the outer heel moving to inner forefoot: normal pronation
- Heavy wear concentrated on the inner edge of the shoe, especially under the big toe: possible overpronation
- Heavy wear on the outer edge only: possible underpronation (supination) — different problem, different shoe
Also check your feet, dry, standing normally: if you can slide a finger flat under your arch with almost no gap, you likely have flatter arches, which often (not always) goes with more pronation. This isn’t diagnostic, but it’s a useful, free starting point before you spend money.
Building strength so you need less from your shoes
Shoes manage symptoms. Strength addresses causes. If overpronation is genuinely linked to pain for you, the muscles most worth strengthening are your glute medius (controls hip and knee alignment) and your calves and tibialis posterior (control the foot’s arch through the gait cycle).
A realistic twice-weekly routine, 15–20 minutes:
- Single-leg glute bridges: 3 sets of 12 per side
- Calf raises, slow and controlled (3 seconds up, 3 seconds down): 3 sets of 15
- Single-leg balance with a small perturbation (throw and catch a ball, or just close your eyes for 20 seconds): 3 rounds per side
- Side-lying leg raises: 2 sets of 15 per side
Do this consistently for six to eight weeks alongside your normal training and most runners notice a real difference in how stable their stride feels — often more than any shoe change delivers on its own.
